Hi,
Ive recently replaced my hard drive and am installing windows xp home on to it from scratch. However, every time i try i get numerous error messages when it tries to copy files required for the installation. They all say "could not copy file 'so and so' from the xp cd. It gives the option to retry which if chosen allows the setup to continue. When it actually gets to installing windows, more error messages are given saying it cannot find files on the cd. Sometimes it even gives a big error message saying "there was a problem installing the folowing hardware: System" If setup manages to complete the install which it has done only a couple of times it wont stay in windows for more than 2 minutes before saying that "explorer has encountered a problem ands needs to close." Then crashing. Any ideas about this would be much appreciated because its driving me insane. Cheers |

Welcome to the Mech..
First, the obvious question, are you positive that the CD is not damaged or scratched in any way? These errors are consistent with a bad CD media. Secondly, I am assuming you double and triple checked that your new hard drive is installed properly, the cables are good, it is detected correctly in the BIOS as are the rest of the drives. Finally, this is running on a stable system right? You mentioned "replacing" your drive, was the system stable before? If you had any issues, are you positive that there were no other problems other than your hard drive. If you are overclocking your system, come back to stock speeds. |

Where did you get the Windows CD from? As Statica said it may be a faulty CD.

I know the cd is fine because ive tested it in another machine. the drive is instaleld properly and shows up in the BIOS, as do all other drives. The system wasnt stable when i replaced the drive but i thought that was the fault of the hard disk. Any ideas?
