So I tried updating my Athlon laptop to SP2 and it was a colossal disaster. Wouldn't boot and I had to start from scratch. Well they say it's an essential update, but I'm not exactly anxious to repeat this problem. What do you say about this? Will I be forever SP2 free, or is there some way around this problem?

I've had no problem with all the updates I've done. I use the CD that was available for free. Part of the preparation procedure I use is to run Adaware, Spybot,Disk cleanup and Disk Defragmenter prior to installing SP2. I also shut down all running programs before the install. Just some tips if you get brave again.
