Is this possible?
Is there a way to make a shortcut (maybe on desktop) so when I click it it will open/close the CD drive? I also like to specify which drive I want to open/close because I have more than one CD drive.

Re: shortcuts to different optical drives
If you'd like to create shortcuts to open them with Windows Explorer: from "My Computer" right-click the CD/DVD drive and select "Create Shortcut" and choose to place it on the desktop. You can name it anyway you'd like. This is assuming you want the shortcut for situations when you have a disk in the drive already, and want to access things quickly. Windows XP will usually automatically prompt for your choice of actions from a menu of options when you insert a certain type of disk the first time (that's when you have the option of "training" XP to perform the same action for that type of disk). You usually don't need a shortcut to close things. [Unlike the Linux/Unix world, it's not necessary to mount/dismount drives in Windows] . . . Gary |

I could make a shortcut of the drive, then right click it and click eject, but it's strange there is no 'close' button. That's something I need.

Hmm - just to make certain I'm on the right track: you are looking to close the CD-tray - yes? [and not "close" or "finalize" a CD recording] . . .
If so, you are right that the Eject option will open the drive, but so far I haven't found any shortcut or command in XP itself that will close the tray. [Seems like there used to be such commands in DOS ages ago, and possibly something like that might be rigged up to open a cmd box and fire off a close command of some kind. . . but I haven't found such a thing]. Most PC users are pretty much accustomed to pushing the button on the drive, or giving the tray a gentle push (both of which work). I believe Mac users are more accustomed to shortcuts that can control this behavior. There is a freeware applet that will open/close CD-trays from either a created shortcut, or from a system tray applet (the user's choice) - it's called "TrayCD" by RJL Software. I don't know much about it, nor have I ever tried it [I've been pretty much a trained chimp = pushing the drive buttons], but it came up on a Google search, so I figure you might want to check it out. http://www.rjlsoftware.com/software/utility/traycd/ You could even drop us a review if it's just the right code for the job! Best of luck . . . Gary |
