Question Unread Mail Message

I'm running XP Home SP2, running Outlook XP, Tweak UI... I want my unread mail messages to be listed on the logon screen. Tweak UI says it is active, but I never have any unread mail messages listed. Does anyone know of another way to enable this function?

See if anything in the MS Overview for the Registry settings involved helps. You might be able to get around it with a Registry edit [make your backups first]. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q304148/

You also might check in the TweakUI help files for clues.

[I don't use either OutLook or TweakUI, so I don't have any details from personal experience - but someone else may have a tip or two to share]

I tried the registry hack, it still doesn't seem to work. One thing I noticed in the Registry was the "unread" mail folder had the name of my old e-mail account, I renamed to my current e-mail address but I didn't change anything on the right-side screen. Any advice would be helpful.

I suppose if you've saved your Outlook messages somewhere safe, you could try either uninstalling/reinstalling it, or the "repair" reinstall (I believe the recent versions of MS Office let you repair modules individually - I think you can reach some of those options either through shortcuts in your program menus, in the Microsoft "System Information" applet, or in the Control Panel Add/Remove applet).

Not sure if you'll have to set up your identities/accounts again - my guess would be probably not for the repair reinstalls, but probably yes for the uninstall/reinstall.

I think you'll be disapointed with it if you get it to run. It's less than accurate..

Are you using the windows "classic" logon?

I'm not using the "classic"... I guess what brought all of this on is "Powertoys for Windows XP - Tweak UI". It really is not necessary but I just want to know how to make that function work.

In TweakUI, go to the Repair category, choose "Repair unread mail count" in the drop-down list on the right, click the "Repair Now" button. See if that does anything good.

I tried the repair... I don't know if it worked or not I don't have any unread mail at this time. I tried marking two e-mails as unread and switching user, and it didn't list the unread mail. On that same note when normally would the unread mail function appear? Does Outlook need to be on? with me logged off?

Send yourself an email. Shut the machine down for ten minutes or so. The "unread" mail message appears at logon.

Unless I am very very very mistaken, your system will not poll your messages if you are not powered on or logged in, or even Outlook or OE running. To test if the Unread mail counter is working, you will need to log in, start OE, then switch user (shortcut Winkey+L) and then see if the Unread mail counter registers any unread emails.

I see, I use MS Outlook XP and the Windows site says,

"The hyperlink is displayed only if you have an e-mail client that is capable of updating the Welcome screen running on your computer. Currently, there are only two programs that support this feature: Microsoft Outlook Express and Microsoft Windows Messenger."

So that is probably one of the contributing factors of why it doesn't show up as an unread e-mail message.
