How to "fix" Windows XP?

When my hard drive began to fail, I ran Disk Doctor to get it mostly functional again and copied the contents (using a program provided by the HD manufacturer) to the new HD. So now Windows XP Home (SP2) works pretty well on the new drive -- all except for Sharing. Other PCs can see the broken system via My Network Places but not connect to it. The broken PC can't see anybody except through Search, but then cannot connect.

Either some files were corrupted when my original disk failed or didn't copy correctly to the new disk. Is there a way that I can selectively repair Windows XP without needing to completely reload the whole thing? Help!

You can do a repair installation by booting from your XP CD, selecting install (Not repair from command console), then selecting repair installation. This will delete and reload all your system files leaving your programs and data intact. You will have to do all of the windows updates again when you are done.

Also check the XP filrewall. Turn it off if it's on. Make sure that you have marked the files/folders/drives that you want to share as shared.

Beleive it or not, sometimes repairing your installation can change you protocol settings. I know it can as I have seen it do so on my machine with the same results you mentioned before. Your protocols must be the same for every machine otherwise they are speaking different "languages."

System Restore does not alter any of your files, it just reverts to your computer's old settings. These settings include old driver installs, desktop changes and installed programs.

System Restore DOES alter files. If you have installed a program and you revert to a date BEFORE you installed it, the program will be gone, but the data created by it will still be intact.

Mr HAL9000

Recently I am facing a problem after installing winxp, a timer is appearing infront of the screen and after the timer gets over, the computer automatically restarts.
This happens sometimes not all the time, can you please tell me why am I getting this timer error?

How should I solve this problem, I repaired my winxp from a bootable cd but again Iam facing this same problem.

Please help me out.
