i often stream videos from online but the problem is that when its ready to play it always opens Nero Showtime instead of windows media player. anyway to change that so i can watch it with windows media player

Sounds like Nero has control of the file extensions, try openning WMP going to TOOLS > OPTIONS > File Types > check the extensions you want WMP to open.

thanks that work but when i was doing that some of the check mark boxes are shaded gray but when i click on it it turns back to the regular white, why was the check thing black

If you notice WMP's handling of files is not based on extensions but groups of file types. For example, for MP3 files it actually deals not just with .mp3 but a number of file types like .mp3, .m3u etc. (This is a grouping of file extensions for the particular filetype) A greyed checked box means that some of those extensions are assigned to WMP & some to another app. Checking them assigns ALL of them to the WMP.
