XP issue after repair
Well here we are again in need of some help. Let me begin with a little background. I built a rig for my brother and after installing software (XP, Office 2000, firefox, adaware, spybot, etc.) and testing, I sent it out to him. After several weeks he installed a game and was playing it and it would crash on him. He went to the games website and downloaded the patch to fix the problem. Well it caused more problems that it fixed. I came here to pcmech and ms sites to fix the problems. We were finally able to do a fix with his XP CD and things were quasi normal. Here are the issues that are left.
I installed SP2 and after the fix it seems to be gone. There are a few remnants that he sees in the control panel (firewall) but his system info shows SP1. We have made several attempts to reinstall from MS web site but all that happens when he tries is “Searching for latest updates” and hangs. I have ordered the SP2 CD in the hopes that it will get things straight. Any other ideas??? Outlook does not allow him to send emails. I walked him through the setup and everything looks fine. I thought it may be his provider and had him call his DSL provider. He was told that his TCP/IP had to be reset. How do we do this???? I went to MS site and it looks like I have to rewrite registry again. Hope NOT!!! Help

the only time I have sen outlook not send e-mail is when the server for out-giong mail was typo error in the setting.
if the computer connects to the internet ok, then I see no reason to reset the IP address |

I would consider reinstalling a fresh copy of XP.

Here is a new twist. I just sent him an email and he can get it. But he still gets a TCP/IP server error when he sends mail. I think it is with his provider??????.
