Here's a link to an article with all the details over at the MS Knowledge Base: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q131652/

Basically, the Registry value that you change is in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Mircosoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/SourcePath

You enter the path to the .cab files on your hard drive. It sounds like you have yours at C:\Win98 - if so, enter that path. A path used by many OEM builders is the C:\Windows\Options\Cabs folder. For folks who've installed from a CD, the path is usually D:\Win98. Once you've entered the value and rebooted, any further prompts for the system .cabs will look to the path you've entered first.

Seems like you're having adventures. Might want to run a full system "thorough" antispyware/antivirus scans just to make sure you don't have unwanted visitors.

To get the "New" option back, you can try restoring the Registry value mentioned in this Microsoft Knowledge Base article http://support.microsoft.com/default...NoWebContent=1

[P.S. ...regarding the Tour - there is a Tour that uses an executable named Discover.exe, and one that uses Welcome.exe, but I haven't heard of one that uses "directory.exe" -- are you sure that's the exact wording in the error? . . . to run the discover.exe without your Windows CD handy, you need the shortcut to point to the .cab files on the hard drive (assuming that they're there). If you find the Discover.exe on your hard drive, you can create a shortcut to it by right-clicking the file, and selecting "Create Shortcut".]

Question

Thanks a bunch!
I did misspell the file. It is Discover.exe ...funny thing is I have 3 win98se pc and none of the have the file? so the tour does not work in any of them?

Also I did the reg edit and that trick did not work? so not sure whats going on there? still no "new" option in the right click field?...again thanks.......Terry

For the "new" option, if the registry edit didn't work: it seems like overkill for this particular situation, but an over-the-top would probably put things right again. Make sure the virus/spyware angle is OK first, and make sure to visit Windows Update immediately after for the Security Updates. http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=70846

For the Tours - I believe the Welcome tour (welcome.exe) is usually in the \Windows folder. The Discover tour (discover.exe) is either run from the CD, or from the .cab files on your hard drive, if they happened to be copied there by your system builder. When on the CD, discover.exe is in \Win98\Tour . . . When on your hard drive, it's usually in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs\Win98\Tour.

P.S. -- The path mentioned in your first post seems like an unlikely place to put the Win98se .cabs [C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ASC\NET\WIN98SE]... I'm guessing that the files in that AOL folder are AOL files specific to machines running Win98se. Many AOL installs will have several such folders for various Windows versions scattered about the hard drive. Somewhat bad manners on AOL's part, but drives are large enough nowadays for a little overzealous marketing here and there].
