Smile Whew! Finally got SP2 installed with AMD Athlon 64 3200+…

The first time I installed SP2 was on my new built computer with XP Pro using the download from Microsoft site which got me the dad-gummed BSOD. Had to ‘restore’ and also clear CMOS and input the BIOS settings again to get operating.

Pam responded to my post concerning this with info that SP2 and AMD 64 were not compatible. Further research indicated that this problem was known by Microsoft and they were working on it. In fact it appeared to be a BIG problem.

But, I did see on other sites that SP2 was installed in some computers along with 64 bit CPU’s.

Hmmm…so I sent off for the free SP2 CD from Microsoft which arrived very quickly. This time I installed it first on my old wimpy computer that had XP Home. First I ran a virus check, cleared all temp files, ran Ad-Aware and Spy-Bot, uninstalled Zone Alarm, and even de-fragged.

It worked. Then decided to try it on the new machine. Did the same clean-up including deactivating the Trend PC-cillin.

On restart I fully expected to see that BSOD. But nope, it all came back ready to go! Updated from the Microsoft site, reactivated Trend, and happily tried poking around to see what this SP2 was all about. The next morning I was a tad uneasy on boot–up wondering if I got off too easy. Maybe another BSOD with the code “fooled ya!” would appear.

But it didn’t happen. So far this machine with AMD 64 bit and SP2 is working flawlessly. But I do wonder why the SP2 download failed and the CD worked?

All programs that run on 32 bit processors will run on 64 bit processors. The processor will run the program in 32 bit mode.
