It sounds like a DNS problem, the first step is to connect and then check the IP settings that the dial-up adapter has obtained, or if it is not obtain automatically, then check the IP settings of the dial-up adapter. Also it could be under InternetOptions> connections tab that the settings for her dial-up connection that she uses may have gotten hosed up..

Doug... your sister sure is having problems with that machine, tell her to check the dial up number she could be calling their fax line or an answering service. What ISP is it?

Can she call the ISP tech for help.
Does she have one of those "gearbox" installation CD's that were so popular in the UK once. Last edited by rjfvillarosa; 11-22-2004 at 06:48 PM. |

<------ ISP Tech Support.
Make sure that their isn't a proxy set up on the machine. Try pinging a website from Dos, if you can't ping the website but can ping the ip of the website than it is DNS. If entering/removing the DNS numbers doesn't help then try these two commands in the command prompt. netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt ipconfig /flushdns Hopefully that'll work for you. You may have to phone you ISP tech for the DNS numbers, unless you post the ISP here, and someone can do a whois. Although she may not be dialing into an fax machine, the number may be having problems with dataflow, so it couln't hurt for her to try a different number. Sorry for the delay in getting back, we were hit by the Korgo worm at work so i,ve been working flat out cleaning PC's. Thanks for the replies guys, i should never have sent this PC via courier, it was working perfect at my house via 56k modem. I had downloaded her account and everthing was fine, internet, outlook express. i have rechecked the settings and looked at the Wanadoo site for info, according to them all tcp/ip and dns are assigned dynamically. The only other setting i can see is not to tick always connect using this account in outlook express tools\accounts\connection tab. I think i am going to have to visit next month cause its a 600mile round trip. Checking with my own eyes before any reformatting & reimaging etc.
NB: the tech support is 50p a minute and as she is unemployed she can't afford to spend time chatting to them. |
