Lighten XP- Any performance increase ?
I bought an old 600E /2645 IBM thinkpad with XP pro already installed on a formatted drive, and should have just reformatted it and loaded my beloved 98se which it would have run better with, but now its too late to turn back as I have spent days loading everything, bookmarks and all.
Question is.. Will I get any increased performance by using a program like XPLite to delete some of the bloat? or am I just going to get some extra disc space? If I will get some speed, what is safe to delete ? Thanks, Chris. |

Everything depends on the use you are gonna give it. XPlite may give you the option to erase IE(you can use IE eradicator), Dx(you can use DX eradicator), WMP, help files(you can erase them manually), lots of internet apps... You may get some extra speed, like 2 or 3 seconds less to boot, but it is better to read tweakings about internet and turn the services you are not gonna use down.

Thanks- Is it safe to delete IE ? I think some programs wont run without IE.
I heard that Ebay and some snipe bid programs need IE installed - you can be using another browser but IE has some essential features they use. Is that so ? |

You probably do need it. IE is very tightly integrated with Windows.

Yes, you need IE to update windows and maybe to check some webs(I can check login in ebay with Firefox if I had joined hotmail before). Even if you dont need this it may cause some unstabilities, but you can restore the system(with xplite or windows) if you see this(windows system restore also eats lots of resources)

if you really want to speed up your system, then remove xp and install w98se, your system will be so fast that you will have a hard time keeping up with it,
I fail to understand why one would pay high bucks for the best O/S yet with the best security and stability, and the ability to fix its self, then look for ways to tear it all apart, remove all its best features, and end up with something less than what w98se can do for you. its just very confuseing |

I hear you Bailey !- Its just that I've got about 8 hours of time invested in loading programs etc. before I realised that it can't deal with xp. I didn't know.
I may yet wipe it and go to 98 after I try it with the extra ram I've ordered, and its not much better. |

more ram will be a big help, and may be a increase in performance.
but the spects on your system may not be the best for good xp performance. and going back to 98se might be you best choice. |

Get the best of both worlds - blow it away and install Win2000 Pro. It will run quite well on that machine and will be every bit as stable as XP without all the bloat and eye candy.
NOTE that if you have a license for XP Pro, you CAN legally install 2000 Pro on it from ANY CD you can get your hands on if the copy of XP Pro is removed and not used on anything else. |
