Unhappy PC restarts for no reason Help!

here is my problem
my pc restarts at any movement for no reason... this happened 2 times in 5-6 hrs... wat i was doing for the firsts time was juz writing an email from mozilla... and the second time when my pc rebooted when i was searching somethin in kazaa...
this has never been a problem with me... i donno suddenly wat happens and my pc juz goes to the boot screen...

as the pc restart its again normal.. it comes up with the scan disk while restarting with no errors and again it works fine for some time and again suddenly it reboots.. after restarting windows says " system has recovered from seriuous error do u want to send the error report" as i send the error report they say its caused due to installation of some drivers and bla bla bla...

my recently installed softwares and drivers include..
Shareaza_2.1.0.0 (i uninstalled it within some hrs..as i didnt like it)

nVidia Display Drivers 66.93_win2kxp_english (latest) (its currently running fine with my graphic card GForce 4 MX 440 128MB)

Messenger Plus for MSN Messenger v3.25 (MsgPlus-325)

im running Windows XP with sp2

I had a pile of alarm bells going off after I installed this (my daughter was nagging me). AVG found three viruses in it and adaware found umpteen spies in it. I believe they were not in the application but downloaded themselves immediately it became active after the install.
Try getting rid of MsgPlus and running antivirus and malware scans.

Consider running your scans in safemode, have a look at this thread for some tips.

And consider the idea of posting a "highjackthis" log, this thread has instructions for posting the log.

Does your monitor screen freeze just prior to the machine restarting itself?

Try running Memtest86. It sounds like it might be a problem with the RAM.

I dont think it might be a problem of RAM ,since RAM provides a working space for open applications and has nothing to do with restart problem, the restart problem of computer mostly occurs due to problem in power supply which is caused by voltage fluctuation.

In case you have a temperamental power supply, try stripping the machine down to the bare essentials like Ram, Video and hard drive only, disconnect any slave hard drives you have and your optical drives. Pull the plugs on any external accessories you have like printers and USB devices. Try and get the machine down to a point where the draw on the power supply is at a minimum.

I notice you have XP and SP2 have you tried a system restore to before you installed your video drivers or any other recent software addition.

Regards,
RAM can have EVERYTHING to do with a random restart... I've come across that literally hundreds of times in my shop where replacing the RAM fixes the problem.

ya the RAM could have a lot to do with it. i would recommend trying to get new RAM like this guy above me said. but for something cheaper i would first try to just take the side of your computer off and put a big fan next to it. my friends computer recently was doing the same thing (randomly restarting) and the problem was that stuff was jsut geting to hot and turning off. i know you said you CPU temp was fine but id still try it just in case. if this does work then you should just go out and buy some new fans for your computer. oh and do you already have an intake and out take fan?? every computer should have these to keep the air moving around in there. also its possible that your fan on your CPU is slowing down maybe because its old? so a new CPU fan couldnt hurt either! hope this helps! peace

Where were you getting the temps from. If you used software it may not be as accurate as using the motherboard monitor.

Well you won't know for sure unless you test it.

As suggested in another post, why don't you just do a system restore to before you installed all those drivers and see what happens. Seems like the simplest and fastest thing to do.

If that does not work then look for other problems.

The age of your PC has nothing to do with RAM compatibility, you could have an incompatible or malfunctioning stick of RAM direct from the mfger.

Control panel, system, advanced, startup and recovery - uncheck restart on error. Next time instead of rebooting, it should bluescreen instead. Read the first few lines of the bluescreen, the stop error and the affected module is your clue to what's going on if it's a software or driver issue. If it's a hardware issue, it will probably reboot anyway.

Thanks for offering your advise, you might be right, but mostly the restart problem occurs due to problem in powersupply which is caused by voltage fluctuation.
This mostly happens when people use their computer without staplizer.
According to my limited and small experience, RAM causes display problem not restart problem.

HAL9000, I dont mean to say that you are wrong, every person has his own experience , I have worked little bit in a computer institute and what I have experienced during my work is that RAM causes display problems mostly .
