Windows NTBackup utility...failing
I have used NTBackup for some time, and recently I have reloaded a new hard drive with everything loaded fresh.
I have my backups run nightly via schedlued task. In doing a routine check of my backups, I noticed that one of them (Quickbooks) was not completing properly. I deleted the old backup for QB, and re-did the routine...but still have the same result. While troubleshooting, this is what I have found out: I always use "shadow copy" when I setup a backup job. If Quickbooks is closed, the backup completes properly...If Quickbooks (even minimized) is open, then the backup is terminated early. In reviewing the backup report, it says that "shadow copy could not be loaded...and attempts to backup without shadow copy". Now I know if the data being backed up, is in use, that backing up with shadow copy disabled, will not work, but using shadow copy it should (& has done in the past) complete sucessful. I am at a loss on why this is happening...any ideas? thanks-larry |

I prefer to back up Quickbooks manually. I use the Quickbooks backup utility to back up each company to another folder on the hard drive, then I copy the .qbb files to a USB key or burn them to a CD for offsite storage.
If you prefer to use NTBackup, you could incorporate this folder into your backup routine - just get into the habit of doing the manual backup at the end of each day. Last edited by glc; 12-04-2004 at 10:55 AM. |

Nothing like automation though...I used to backup QB using their utility, but you can not schedule it. I actually have 6 backup operations sheduled to run nightly...all in a batch file which is then scheduled to run at midnight. I just can't figure out why QB won't backup if open (it should & has done so in the past). I do not have this same problem with other programs i.e. one of my backups is my "contacts & addresses" in my browser (Opera)...with opera running, the backup runs successful.

If a database is open (and if the company is open, the database is open) it will NOT back up properly, if at all. Close Quickbooks before leaving for the day - at least close the company. I see leaving Quickbooks open a security issue anyway - and if you have a power failure, you may also wind up with a corrupted database.
