BIG XP Home Price Difference?

At newegg, you can have XP Home w/SP1 for $91. Yet, the XP Home w/SP2 version is over $275!! Why the huge difference in cost between the two? Are there other major differences in the product?

I have the free SP2 disc that I ordered from Microsoft. Couldn't I just reuse that when installing the $91 version?

Yes you could. It's more of a demand thing, with the popularity of SP2, newegg is banking on people clamouring for the newest version. Get the SP1 version anyday, and either install SP2 with the MS CD or create a slipstreamed version of SP2 before you begin.

Addendum: Are you sure you are looking at the right products?
I see a XP Home w/ SP2 here: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...102-151&DEPA=0 for $91
and a 3 pack of XP Home w/SP2 here : http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...102-152&DEPA=0 $275

Argh. That does make a little more sense, now, doesn't it? Ha.

Best Buy has XP pro/SP2 upgrade for $215, if you have *any* older version of windows (even 95) for a source for a qualifying the update version, you can do a clean install & get the full program

The more expensive editions are RETAIL versions. There is no operating differences in the OEM and Retail versions of the product.

The licensing differences are that the Retail version can be moved to a different computer (provided it is removed from the first computer also). The OEM version only allows for upgrade of the exisiting computer.

What people manage to do and what the licensing agreement is are two different matters. But that's the difference.

Actually, I think it was a typo. The prices now are much more reasonable.

Retail versions come with free tech support, OEM support comes from the vendor which you purchased it from. If you want MS support, be prepared to pay per incident.

Statica hit it on the head with his Addendum. I was looking at a Three-Pack of SP2 compared to one OEM version of SP1. The Retail version is $11 more than the OEM.
