xp password recovery

My friend seems to have forgotten the password to her laptop. Since I have not seen the laptop, I'm guessing its the one where she place the password at the startup screen, that blue screen. I think this is the solution

I think that I can make a recovery disc on my pc and use it with the laptop pc. Is my theory correct?

If you forget the password, one of 2 things must be true (and this is to explain the KB article that you saw)
a) The person must have created a password recovery disk BEFORE forgetting the password; I am assuming that she does not have the password recovery disk. If she does have the pwd recovery disk then here are the directions to use it:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=305478
If there is no password recovery disk read on...
b) You must remember the administrator password, or AT LEAST the password to a username with administrative rights.
The bad news, if the person has forgotten all passwords to users with administrative rights (including the 'Administrator') then you are looking at a reinstall. Chalk it up to experience, and remember the root passwords and/or create a password recovery disk.
The good news is that most people (especially those who installed XP before SP1) did not create admin passwords by default (it should be blank). So start in safe mode and log in using username: Administrator .. password: . (Or boot normally to the login/welcome screen and press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice and login as Administrator and blank password.

And now for the mandatory Moderator note: This board will not allow for information on bypassing password or system hacking, even if your situation is genuine, simply because we have no way of verifying it. Please read the rules: http://forum.pcmech.com/rules.php ; any violation of the rules will have to be dealt with appropriately.

I think she has forgotten everything, and I think the laptop is prebuilt, installed xp when the laptop was received. So I am not sure what the password might be. I will see it tomorrow. She is interested in the data on it, and would like to avoid and format and install xp.
