dll's missing in win pro for boot up

i have an ibm netvista running win 2000 pro. It was in storage for awhile, and when i tired to start it up again for my nephew, i got this message: Windows 2000 could not start because of an error in the software. needs dlls for kernel. I can't get beyond this please advise. do i need to boot from a start up disk? How do i get the puter to start? It goes through post ok and i can get into the bios, but i'm not sure where to go from there.

Yes I do believe at this point I would boot from the w2k Cd and do a repair installation. You could try getting the F8 menu if it gets that far and booting into safe mode or last known good configuration, but it does not sound like you will be able to do either of those..The thing is though if it worked fine the last time you used it before storing it away and now this, you may be looking at possible harddrive problem. Many times they get knocked out of whack during storage/moving..

You do not need a startup disk - you need the Windows 2000 Professional CD.

No you can not download one, you can make a bootdisk, but what you need in the win2000 installation cdrom.. If you do not have one it may not be able to be fixxed. What I was trying to refer to is the fact that if you take a good working PC and store it and bring it out and have troubles like you are describing then very likely HD troubles, even if thats the case and you get a new harddrive your going to need a windows installation CD..
