XP locking up Graphics

Computer locks up at different times and have to restart . I have tried different things and have come up with, when I disable the graphics controller in device manager the computer works great. I think it has the graphic built in the motherboard . IBM pc ,Intel 82810 graphics . What can be done to get it going ? I can't change the resolution the way it is now. Will a graphics card install on the motherboard? If so will I still have a problem since the graphics is built in? Thanks

XP has native support for the 810 chipset, there are no motherboard drivers provided. The video driver is an upgrade from the builtin XP driver.

I took the case off and there is no slot for a graphics card. So I guess to fix the problem it calls for a new motherboard this time tho with a seperate graphics card.

You don't need to scrap your current motherboard. Even though your motherboard doesn't have an AGP port, you can still put a PCI video card in. You will need to disable the onboard video, install the card and load the PCI card drivers and see if that solves the problem.

When I disabled the onboard video on my HP machine, I had to change the onboard video driver over to a standard vga driver instead of the Intel driver. In device manager, find the onboard video and click on update driver. Click on pick from list, and find standard display types. Find standard vga driver, apply the driver and then Windows will ask if you really want to change, click yes and then you will probably have to restart at this point. Once you do that, it might take care of it. Once the computer boots back up, go back to device manager and click the disable in this hardware profile box on the properties screen. Hopefully that helps.

Sorry I had to be away for a week .
I tried everything you said but nothing has worked.
To refresh , the pc works fine when I have the graphics disabled in device manager. It hangs up and have to reboot with it when its enabled. I put in a pci graphics card and nothing would show up on the monitor it stayed black.
One more thought does the pci card have to be in the first slot or would that make a difference? I didn't think of that when I tired it. It has 3 slots and the first one has the ethernet card in it. Thanks

It can be in any of the slots - but I gotta ask something obvious - did you move the monitor cable to the port on the card?

Yes I did . I took the card out of the pc I'm using now so I know it's good. The card is a Radeon 7000. I also installed the driver for it. Do you think it might be another problem that is interfering . 128mg ram, 20 gig hd,
About the only other thing I know to try is reformat and try it but I have some programs I don't want to lose and they would have to be reinstalled.
