Downgrading to XP Home?
Some months ago, I upgraded my PC's "XP HOME" OS, to "XP PROFESSIONAL" OS - by way of an organizational authorized "XP PROFESSIONAL" upgrade CD and associated key ( a legal purchase).
Now I am planning on replacing the MOTHERBOARD, CPU and Video Board in this PC - and have a feeling it might be safer to downgrade back to XP HOME, before I try to do a motherboard/cpu replacement and the necessary "XP Repair" steps. How do I downgrade back to XP HOME? I have both CD's - both the original XP HOME I purchased at WMART, and also the upgrade XP PROFESSIONAL CD (& Key). Can it be done? Fred Spring Hill, FL 11/30 |

No need, just do a repair reinstall with the XP Pro CD.

Except for some ellusive "professional IP" features, which I have yet
to see a need for at "home" - seemed like just reverting back to XP HOME, would make life more simple, more standard. XP PRO offers no "virus" or "scam" or "Scumware" features, I use Ad-Aware 6.x for some of that. Last year I refused to pay Norton another "yearly fee" for their anti-virus package ............. after I originally bought it! And a good firewall - seems like smoke and mirrors. I notice in Control Panel's "remove sw" startup - there is a "remove XP" item ................. what would that remove? Could not find "XP Pro" anywhere on list. ........still would feel better if I could revert back to XP HOME. Fred

If you are so determined to return to XP home, why not add a new hard drive to that list of hardware? You could install the new hard drive as a master and then install XP home on that, all fresh and new including a nice fresh install of SP2. Then just slave your old hard drive to the new one.
You do have the CD key for your copy of XP home?

The repair reinstall will take you 5 minutes plus whatever it takes to reapply Windows updates and install new drivers - doesn't get any simpler than that.
