Strange problem when switching users

It has happened twice today. When I go to switch from someone elses account to my account an error comes up and says, "Windows could not switch users... If this presists you will have to restart you PC". Those aren't the exact words but that's basicly what it says. I have never seen this before. I have had to restart once to get around it but it just happened again and waiting 5 minutes worked. What is going on?

Does anyone have any idea? It's becoming more and more frequent. I have discovered that if I wait a few minutes I can log on without restarting. Sometimes it doesn't show the error message and simply goes right back to the log on screen.

It's getting even worse. Now it does it every single time I try to switch users. If I completely log off of the other user I can log onto mine after several tries. When it works the PC speaker beeps once. I am confused and very irritated. I upgraded my RAM so I could switch users faster. It was that way for several weeks and now this started.

I wouldve suggested more RAM, but I see you already added on more. That is the usual issue with user switching. I would also suggest running the Windows compatibility advisor and check for incompatible applications. Instructions: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...s/russel1.mspx

Thanks for the reply. I don't have any new programs running since it started. There is another thing I noticed. It seems to have started this after I changed the logon screen to a Christmas themed one. One which I use every year. I don't see how changing the logon screen would cause this but I'll try changing it to something else.

Ok I changed the logon screen and it seems to be fixed now. I don't see how it could have caused the problem. I have used that before (last year at this time) without any problems. Doesn't a new logon screen only change the background and the location of the buttons?
