xp home backup error need advise

tried to backup my 60g (7.1g used) to a Quick Formatted 20g slave drive. after following the wizard and clicking the button to backup the following error was reported:

Backup Status
Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: File
Media name: "60 gig drive backup.bkf created 12/2/2004 at 8:31 PM"

Backup Status
The files for the recovery diskette could not be created. The operation was aborted.

The operation did not successfully complete.

anybody tell me why not? and what do i gotta do to get it to complete successfully, before it's too late?
