comp "freezes" when opening certain things?
hi, i have a problem that my comp kind of freezes when opening certain folders or files, and only one at a time... it used to be a movie file that froze up my comp, and then i booted into safe mode and deleted, now it's an unrelated folder that causes my comp to freeze. mouse still moves but i can't do anything... and all other programs are still running, though i can't interact with them. i just ctrl+alt+delete and it says "not responding" for that folder so i just close the folder. i'm on xp pro sp2, i've done a virus check with avg, spyboted and ad-awared, no change... pretty confused now... it's not like this folder has any special files in it... just some avi's that i've had for a while... i guess it's some program cuz i can access things fine in safe mode... but i have no idea what it could be. any guesses? thanks.

It usually takes time to access large video files on Explorer because explorer tries to access the details of the video itself. This takes time if the video is large or uses a buggy codec. Instead of openning windows explorer check to see if you can delete the file using the command line interface.

Hom much RAM is installed in your PC? Large Files like videos eat up a lot of RAM during file execution. During multitasking, memory usage is just too high that your PC seems to be unresponsive, but it just takes time to load selected files. Try adjusting your virtual memory/page file. Monitor your memory usage in the Task Manager to know how much memory is available and used and also with your Page File.

What are the rest of your system specs? It may take some time to open the folder because of the contents.

i don't think it's ram or pagefile, i have plenty of those according to task manager, i'm using p4 2A, asus p4sdx motherboard (sis chipset), 2*256 corsair xms pc2700, geforce2, sb live.... i've had this comp for a few years, and i reformat once a year, in this case 2 months ago, and this started 2 weeks ago... i don't know why this is happeneing to this particular folder, there's only a couple video files... i can open my other folders with much more (like 10x more) video files just fine. i don't think it's just slow to open it, i've left it for like 20 min and it stays the same...

Try running chkdsk /f at a command prompt, a reboot will be required, then do a defrag.
