remove files

hi
i used on my PC (OS XP) cygwin for a certain software i had to run on unix.
now i don't need it any more but i can't get rid of some of the files cygwin used.
these are the lapack ,atlas and some of the shortcuts cygwin made.
when trying to delete them i get a message :

cannot delete ****** access is denied
make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use.

when trying to delete with the commant prompt i get the message:

access is denied

any ideas?

If you are certain you want to get rid of these files and that in doing so you are not going to make something else nonfunctioning, then I would delete them in safe mode. The reason access is denied is because the file is in use by something, so make certain that getting rid of it will not affect that something else.

Maybe cygwin is still running in the background and denying you access to the files, have you checked processes to see if it is running?

format comes to mind, but I don't think you will want to do that.
but it does fit the bill you asked for, its free.

There are a couple of things in that proccesses list that I don't recognize, can you just humour me by reading this thread and then posting a HJT log.

Please post the entire log. There has to be more to it than that. Do not shut down any processes - reboot the machine and then run HJT without doing anything else first.

The Machine Debug Manager, Mdm.exe, is a program that is installed with the Microsoft Script Editor to provide support for program debugging.
Your HJT log looks pretty clean to be honest. That cygwin program? I don't know it to use, but am I right in saying that it is a linux/unix simulator? for running linux programs with windows explorer? and if so maybe these files you wan't to get rid of are now part of your windows system files, which will make deleting them a little troublesome but not impossible.

edit...I am talking to a friend on msn at the moment and he is a major Linux fan, he is convinced that the files you want to get rid of have associated themselves with your windows system files, and as such you might have to go as far as a format and reinstall to get rid of them.

edit2...He suggests trying to force deletion via recovery console.

yes it is . it's like running unix from inside windows. when I ran cygwin it didn't install itself onto windows .
when I install cygwin I chose to have all the files in dos format. now somehow i got stuck with a few files that don't seem to have anything in common.

Is it vital to get rid of these files or can you just ignore them if they are small?
Is it possible to delete them in DOS?

Not really because windows is running and you will probably still get "access denied". Try booting in to DOS and deleting the files from there. If you are not up on DOS there are plenty of people here and plenty of sites you can go to for help............. hope I am not speaking out of turn

Slipstream SP2 into your XP CD - then you can use the console.

http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsX...p2-bootcd.html

I have a very hard time believing you only have TWO items in your HJT log after the process list.

Amose, if you can't slipstream SP2 for whatever reason, you can always remove SP2 from add/remove programs. Then boot to the Recovery Console from the XP CD and type "delete" whatever in the command prompt. You can then re-install SP2.

(By the way, if you're worried about uninstalling and re-installing SP2, don't be. I've done it before and all my files/settings were left perfectly intact).

We need to see the COMPLETE list with nothing ignored, please - or we can't properly diagnose anything.
