Win 98 setup, screwup
I just installed Win98 everything seemed to go fine, or so I thought. Then I went to Add/Remove Programs and clicked on the Windows Setup tab, some of the programs or devices had a shaded box with the check in them. The check is ok,but the shaded box is a no no. That means some of the drivers didn't install right. When I clear the box, and recheck it, a message comes up Please insert the disk labeled Win98 CD-Rom and click OK. I screwed up somewhere in the install. Is this the win 98 install CD?
One other thing, in device manager there is a yellow exclaimation mark next to two devices. PCI communication Device and USB Host to Host Bridge I must have done something wrong in the install How can I correct these problems? Emerson |

Do you have with you your motherboard CD??? Use this CD to update your drivers.
Post your system specs??? Why Win 98??? Are you going to have dual-boot? |

When you are in the Windows "Setup" tab of the Add-Remove Software applet in Control Panel, it's OK for an item to have a "shaded" box with a checkmark. All that this means is that this category ("Accessories", for example) has many optional modules, and that some haven't been installed. You don't really need the module for FAT32 conversion, for example, if you already have a FAT32 partition. The default installation for Win98 leaves out several of the System Tools, Accessories, Communications, etc. options.
[. . . and while you were in Add/Remove earlier, it's OK for Win98 to ask for the installation CD, since that's where the extra files you wish to install are located . . . if you copied the .cab files to your hard drive, you then have the option of choosing "Browse" and pointing to that location] The PCI Communications device is likely a modem (or network card). Like rcvalencia9 mentions, if you can roundup a motherboard CD, or visit the website of the motherboard's manufacturer for drivers, the flags in Device Manager should disappear once the right drivers are installed. If the modem/network isn't onboard (but a add-in card in a PCI slot) = that driver won't be available at the motherboard maker's site. You'll have to search for that separately. If you see any markings on the card, you can post that info here (or try a Google search & head for the manufacturer's website). Best of luck . . . Gary |
