User Passwords And Monitoring Software??????
i am running windows XP Pro, and i was wondering if there is anyway i can see other peoples passwords since i am the admin on all of the pcs? Say for example someone forgets there password, is there anyway i can look it up on the pc, or is the only option to reset the password?
Also does anyone have any good software that i can use to monitor users? some of these users crashed my system before and also have downloaded several viruses to my pc, so i am trying to find out what they are doing to do all of this. i have them on a limited account but that obviously didn't stop them from crashing things? Please Help? |

You don't say what kind of network it is, workgroup, domain, etc. Regardless you can't see others passwords. Just a standard security model. You can reset or change passwords though.

A domain is much more complex but provides quite a bit more centralized management. It also requires W2K Server, W2K3 Server or a Samba Server running on Linux/BSD. It uses the client/server model unlike a workgroup which uses peer-to-peer.

do you know of any good websites, and or books to help explain setting up and maintaing a domain network? if you run a domain, do you have to use special software since it client/server? for example if everybody wants to use office 2003, do you put the application on the server and then everyone shares it, or do u have to put it on each client pc?

Like I said, setting up a domain would be overkill for only 6 computers. You would need Windows 2000/2003 Server, which is pretty expensive. You could also use Samba on Linux/BSD. Quite a bit to manage it as well.

If you are the Administrator on each of the machines, (and it is just a workgroup, no Novell client or anything) then you can just log on, with the Admin account, and then under Control Panel -> Users you can change the password. This only works with the admin account though.
