1607: Runtime DLL error
Trying to install a software update on a 98se machine, via the internet. Software is installed locally on all machines on the network, look to a server drive for database information if that's relevant. Update encounters an error: 1607 unable to install installshield runtime dll or something to that effect. I've tried deleting and reinstalling isscript 8 and removed msi (msi.dll msiexec.exe msihnd.dll) rebooted and reinstalled from M$. This is the only machine I've encountered any problems with, updated 3 XP machines, and several other 98se machines. Everything I can find on this error says it's a problem with the installshield script or permissions, but I thought that only applied to nt/xp, not 98??? I have no idea how to fix it. Any suggestions from you helpful folks?

Thanks G, I'd hoped you'd stop in.
That command was successful, it registered the .DLL, however the software update still gives the 1607 error: Unable to install Installshield scripting runtime. It launches a white window with a status bar, says checking operating system then configuring windows installer, and that's when the error pops up. Any other suggestions? |

You have Norton or any other antivirus installed that has script blocking? What version of IE is on it?

It's running Symantec Corporate Ed. 8.1, I've tried the update with AV disabled, even completely disabling and rebooting, and it is running IE 6.0. Thanks for sticking with me on this one, G.

Can you try reverting to IE 5.01 or 5.5? Can you uninstall Symantec and reinstall it later?

yep, can do either of those, most probably wait and come in on saturday and do it, as it's not critical to do it now, and the machine does get a decent amount of use. I thought about reverting back to previous IE, but didn't know if it'd help. The update is done internally through the program, if that matters, IE isn't used at all. I know, however, I've heard you say IE 6 on 98 is prone to "issues". Funny thing is we've had no problem with this software updating before, it's been in use for a year or so on all of our platforms. Nothing has been changed on the machine either, which is what has me stumped. One side note, the "windows" key was "stuck" for a while, as every letter it seemed I typed (E, M, R) would activate the corresponding hotkey. I rebooted to see if I got the "stuck key" error, and didn't, so I ran a v/s and spybot/adaware scan and the problem went away. Thought maybe that had affected the update, but still no dice.
