Temporary Internet Files

A quick (hopefully) question re TIFs. I very recently upgraded my system with XP and now dual boot with Win98SE.

On win98se the process for removing the TIF and cookies folder was to boot to DOS and execute the following command

DELTREE TEMPOR~1 for TIF & DELTREE COOKIES for Cookies, etc

This not only removed all the files from those folders but also recreated the Index.dat files in these 2 folders so that the index.dat file in the TIF was 32k and in cookies 16k (ie their native size).

Is there a similar process in XP or any other manual process which is as effective as the one for win98se or does one have to resort to third party utilities with that XP.

Many thanks for any help which you can provide

Disk Cleanup will remove them along with other unwanted files quite easily, in both 98 and XP. Otherwise open IE, click tools, internet options and select delete Temp Files. Just be sure to select off line files too. You can also set IE to delete the files when you close the browser. Use the Advance tab in Internet Tools and scroll down to Security settings.

Now that I reread his post, I think you're right. And I don't have answer for that.

Many thanks for your replies guys. No wasn't necessarily looking for a start up delete function. Just a way in XP similarly to win98se of clearing the TIF, etc ie going to dos etc...

My may concern is the size of the index.dat files located within the TIF and Cookies folder. An operation such as the one you described Panama Red would not touch the index.dat files and these would keep on growing in size over time.

I am not sure if there is an easy win98se 'user' solution to this for xp from the considerable number of threads I have read in the last 24 hrs. Unless I am very much mistaken I may have to turn to third party utilities such as CCleaner or Eraser.

I think the reason why you didn't find anything could be that XP doesn't run in DOS ? I remember that from somewhere, not sure where. It does have a Command Prompt, so maybe you could run the code using that, once you find out excatly what code it would be. But wouldn't you have to run that command before windows started ?

I've never heard of this index.dat file, but all you are doing is deleting the Temp Int Files and Cookies folders. So under your user name, just go delete those folders. Searching for index.dat reveals there is one in your cookies folder and all the others, that I have, are 32kb and smaller so you could leave them.

I am pretty sure that this is something that is already known as regards the index.dat file but the 'naitive' size of these files in the Cookies & History folders is 16k and in the TIF 32k. These will keep growing in size over time and as you use the net. As you are probably aware, no amount of cleaning using IE>Delete Files will reduce their size.

It is not possible to delete the Cookies and TIF folders if you log into your own user name, have tried. The only way to do it looks like to boot into safe mode as Administrator and then select the username and do it that way. I tried it in my test system and this seems to work restoring the(se) folders to default sizes with the index.dat files at their 'native' size.

It looks like the command prompt for XP for the old 'deltree' is rmdir /s [path].
Trying to find out what the full process for this would be. Unless someone in this forum can help in this area.

Right, you can't delete the folder, but you can go in it, select all, and delete the files.
