Icon Problem with boot-drive C:

I am using Windows XP Professional with SP2

Pentium 4

With:
Two HDD's C: and E:
One Floppy drive A:
One CD drive D:

All icons for these drives are ok except the icon for C:

The icon for my boot-drive C: has changed to an icon that is normally used for files with no association, so too some files on HDD are showing the same icon.

Also one phpBB forum that I post on works fine, but other phpBB forums (that used to work ok) are giving me problems, i.e. the controls that allow bold, text, itlaic text, etc no longer work, but if I manually type-in the [?] and [/?] this does the job.

On these phpBB forums that are giving problems, when I click on the "B" control for bold-text, I get refresh back to a previous page of the forum or back to the foum main index page.

I am also having problems on some web-sites that used to work ok, but now the controls to drop-down menus, >> next and << back for pages on the sites are not working.

I have done a repair with my original XP CD and re-installed SP2, but still the problems persist.

Any help welcomed.

Regards and merry Christmas to all.

As far as your corrupted icons go, you need to repair your icons. I forget how to do it outside of using tweakui, which in the last section of it can repair icons for you.

For the php forums, make sure your not in some enhanced mode and that you have the options turned on to format text or something along those lines.

Thanks Dragon,

I have tried tweakui to no avail.

I noticed that when I first booted-up, then clicked "My Computer" the C: drive icon was back to normal for a brief moment then reverted back to the wrong one again.

A search of the registry came up with this:

Left Pane:

Hkey Current User
Software
Microsoft
Windows
Current Version
Explorer
MousePoints2
C
Autorun
Default Icon
------------------------------------------
In "Default Icon" on the right Pane this:

C:\Simply\cbwuser.exe,0

I think this is the problem.

What should be in the right-pane for this key?

Note:"Simply" is no longer installed on my PC.

Any ideas?

Download the diagnostic tool from the hard drive manufacturer's website and run that.

What is that going to accomplish? This is a registry issue, not a failing hard drive.

Is there some way that I can get a copy of XP Registry-keys, specific to the matters of drives and their icons?

Answer

Just for those searching for the answer.
I had the same problem.

Simply erase the autorun.inf file in the drive.

I had the same problem.
