XP showing used space that's not actually used

I'm running XP Home SP2 on one of my machines where hard drive space is at a premium. Anyway, I was browsing through "My Computer" to try and clear up some space when I noted that in the "Documents and Settings" folder was reading as being 281mb on disk. "All Users" seems to be accurate. I checked each of the inner folders (Cookies, Desktop, Favourites, Start Menu, UserData, Windows) and each of them are no more than a few kb. I've rerouted all my documents, videos etc. to a "My Documents" folder that I've created. So where is Windows getting this space from???

Thanks a lot in advance. JTH

Try running Disk Cleanup, windows could be hiding hidden files from view.

Okay great, that got it down to 92mb. But it still should only be a few kb. Any other ideas?

I imagine the bulk of that is probably settings related to your account, and other bits and pieces. Try turning on View Hidden Files, and see if you can find anything unecessary (just don't overuse the Delete button, deleting Windows stuff is not a great idea).

Most of the hidden files in the folder are probably important. I wouldn't delete them until you were sure they weren't useful.

How do you unhide files? Also, what is New.BDF? It's a file that seems to be continually created lately.
