New computer +XP switches itself on
I have just bought a new computer and had Windows XP Home. installed. All seems to be going okay except for the computer keeps switching itself on after I shut it down.
I have never had XP before so dont know if this is part of the activation reminder process or not. (haven't activated XP yet, got 26 days to go) It wasnt doing this when I first got the computer home on sunday but I think it started doing it after I connected the internet. I'm on dial up. I am not sure if this is a problem or not and if it is, whether it is a problem with XP or the computer. It doesn't turn itself on immediately, it takes quite some time before it restarts the computer. haven't really taken any notice as to how long probably an hour or so. but I am only guessing cos I leave the room where the computer is and then when I return, its switched itself on.

Take a look in the bios and see if the Wake On... options are enabled. Disable Wake On Modem, Wake On Lan, etc and see if that helps. Normally these features are to bring the computer out of Standby, but it may be what's causing your problem.

Where did you get the computer from?
Check the power and reset lead from the front of the case and make sure they are connected correctly.

There was a similar thread awhile ago...the user said the computer would start by itself whenever the phone rang. The "wake on ring" feature was enabled in the BIOS. The user disabled it and the problem went away.

I have one machine that does the same thing regardless of bios settings. Something weird with the phone modem. Hope yours works.

Thanks guys, I did what you suggested and disabled the "wake on" option and the problem is fixed. I have even tried to make it start itself, banging the phone receiver up and down and the comp stayed "off" alos waited for a couple of hours. So thanks again guys. really appreciate the help I get here.
