Upgrading Computer... Do I need a new Windows XP disc?
I am currently going to upgrade my current computer. I am replacing the current processor, main hard drive (with a raptor) and video card.
Does this mean that I need to buy an new Windows XP disc or can I just call them to get a new serial number? I am not sure. I have upgraded before with a different video card and hard drive and they Microsoft did let me use my current disc. Thanks in advace for your help.

If you are replacing your present computer's components you do NOT need a new XP CD. Simply try to do online activation, if it doesnt work, you will need to call the 800 # that is provided, explain that you did an upgrade to your computer and that's it. Should take about 2 min.
Keep in mind that WPA is not meant to hassle you if you have a legal copy of the OS and want to play around with your h/w .. hey its your computer and your OS; you are free to do whatever you want. It is designed to protect the company against fraudulent uses like using XP on multiple computers etc. |

As long as the Windows CD is yours you can just go ahead with the installation, when windows asks you to register the installation, carry out the registration proccess and if there is a problem windows will inform you. You will be presented with a long string of numbers and all you need to do is call customer support, you will have to give the numbers to the call rep and they will give you an unlock key in return, just type it in and away you go, remember to have a pen and paper handy when you make the call. The last one I did was all automated by robot.

Thanks guys. That is what I figured. Like I mentioned in the first thread I have upgraded before and had to call the 800 number and everything was ok. I just wanted to make sure before I did this again. I appreciate the quick response!
Thanks again!!! |
