msmsgs.exe

Sometimes life without a memory is grand, sometimes it ain't...aka...waking up in a new world every day.
Someone want to break down in step by step instructions how to execute the below remedy? Please...Like, how do you get to where you can get to "edit"...

How do I get rid of / Uninstall Messenger from Windows XP?

Answer

The first thing you have to do is make messenger visible in 'Add Remove Windows Components'
Edit c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf, remove the word 'hide' from the line msmsgs=msgrocm dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 (leave all the commas), and then save the file.

Go to control panel, run Add/Remove programs, and click the 'Add/Remove Windows Components' button. Messenger will now be displayed in the list, and you can uncheck the box. Messenger will be removed.

FYI The "Messenger Service" is not the same as the "msmsgs.exe" or "Windows Messenger" service the three are totally different.

Messenger 4.7 is a networking feature of XP and it is very difficult to switch off. Most of my customers use messenger, but not 4.7, it is not compatible with Instant Messaging on the internet, you need the new 6.2 for that, what I always do with every fresh install of XP is to uninstall 4.7 and as you say you don't use instant messaging then this may be a solution for you.
Try this, copy all of this,

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

click START>RUN then paste the above in the dialogue box and click OK.
4.7 will be uninstalled from your machine, should you ever want it back, it can be reinstalled from your XP CD.
