XP Problems

Ok, when I shut down my PC, it tends to stop at the "Windows is shutting down...." screen and won't actually shut down unless I do it manually. It also takes a long time to boot up. It has been running fine until recently and I really don't know what the problem could be.

I've done a Virus scan a few times and a spyware, we had no viruses and we cleared off everything from the spyware.

Could there be any other reasons for the problems?

Can you tell us the make and model of your machine? is it store bought or home build? have you had any problems with your house lights recently like flickering or total power cuts?

This used to happen to me a lot.. my system was haning on boot up.. and i think it might be due to certain programs that windows can't end.... Just a thought, so i don't know if you want to take my word for it and test stuff out... After a while, it just went away for me.

Can you tell me what OS you have on your machine? I see "XP problems" in your opening post but that machine originally came with windows ME.
If you are running XP was this a clean install on a fresh clean hard drive, or an over the top installation on top of ME? (not recommended).
Have you done any hardware updates on the machine?
How long have you been having this problem? ie: since you installed XP?

It was originally on ME, but we upgraded to XP through COMPAQ. I did that awhile ago and I've been having this problem for a few months now. But it would work fine after a couple of reboots. Except this time, it doesn't go back to the original way it ran. I myself have not done any updates to the computer, but I can't say anything for my parents as this is a family computer. And I haven't done any hardware upgrades either, the last thing I did was install another stick of RAM but that was a while ago.
