Gateway XP Home on custom built
I am about to order components for a new AMD based machine and would like to use the Gateway Windows XP home software that came with my existing machine. This would save me a little money for other things.
Gateway service tech says I can use it as Windows is a plug and play program. Another site suggests I may have a problem. What do the real experts at PC Mech have to say? Thanks Jim Baxter

if it is a full oem xp cd, then you may be able to use it as long as it is removed from the first computer. and you have the cd key for it.
but if it is a gateway cd with xp on it, it may not work as it would be locked to the gateway system only. |

Whether it will install or not, it's not legal. The license is only for the computer it was delivered with.

Hmmmm how about my ms office, 2004 norton antivirus, ms money, ect.
I bought them and paid for them. I have the cd key number for every program on my existing pc including the xp program. The xp disc has a blue lable. at the top in small print is Gateway. Under that is Operating System Windows xp home edition. It does also say " to be used with a new Gateway PC. |

If any of that software came with the Gateway, it is only licensed to the Gateway. If you bought them retail, you may uninstall them and reinstall them on your new computer.

If you call Microsoft Activation Number and explained to them that you want to uninstall Windows XP from the Gateway computer and then install on the new computer, they (Microsoft) might let you do it. There's no harm in trying the worse thing they can say is no you can't and Microsoft isnt all that bad as most people would let you believe.

Then too, you may find that XP CD is tied to the Gateway BIOS.
