Question Drivers Wont install.. (XP Pro)

Hey, i recently reformatted. This is my first time reformatting since i got the computer. And i was wondering why drivers for my VIA 4 in 1 drivers wont install. I have an ASUS K8V SE DELUXE mobo and the drivers are on the support cd. Now the only reason why i think this is happening is b/c i upraded to SP2, and then tried to install it. They were installed when i got the computer, which at the time the SP 1 drivers were on it. So is my computer messed up or do i have to unistall SP 2 install it and then reinstall SP2?

Thanks

Are you getting some type of error message when trying to install them? If you do post it here so we can get a better idea of whats going on. Also, you might want to get updated 4-in-1 drivers. New drivers do not always guaranty better performance but some sort out minor bugs.

As edrod said can you be a little more specific in the way that the drivers will not install. Are you sure you need them? I have a machine running XP Pro with SP2 and I have the 4 in 1 drivers for it but it runs just fine without them.
It's possible that XP/SP2 has native support for what you want.

There are no errors or anything. They wont install period. After i try installing them it needs to reboot. So i reboot and its not installed. I checked under program files and nothing was there in regards to VIA. So im thinking maybe theres something else i need to install, but the drivers is the only disk i have in regards to it. Im kinda confused.

When you install VIA 4-in-1's I don't think you are going to see VIA folder under program files. I dont know off hand but there is a way to verify what version of 4-in-1's you currently have loaded on your machine. HTH

This was taken from another site:

Question:
How can I tell what VIA drivers I have installed?

Answer:
Open Start - Run and type in "regedit" (without the apostrophe marks). Double clikc HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then SOFTWARE and check the listing under VIA and/or VIA4in1Driver to see what version you are running.

No need to install them. XP runs fine with native Windows drivers. If you really want to install them anyway, download the latest from Via.

Exactly what does not work if they are not installed? Are you sure you don't need to install some camera software or something instead?

im positive i dont need to install any software. I got my computer and everything was installed. I didnt install any camera software. I just poped the memory card into the correct slot and it would load up fine. After i reformatted it wont let me install.

Memory card readers should not need any drivers in XP. Exactly where is this slot? On a USB card reader?

Alright heres the deal. I reformatted again ( my 2 time within a week ) because my computer would freeze randomly, i could be talking to people on AIM, searching the web, what ever and it would freeze, so im hoping i got rid of that problem. Now back onto the 4 in 1 card reader, i tried installing the drivers again. Same result, nothing appears installed, nothing pops up when i enter my digital cam's SD memory card. So im thinking maybe its somehow disabled or something?? Device manager shows errors...its extremely frustrating, ahhh why is it doing this? thx for any help

Watch the language, Dlon. We don't allow that here, frustrated or not.

Is the card reader showing up in My Computer? glc is correct that XP provides the drivers natively for card readers. Is yours connected to the proper mobo header? Did you possibly connect it by mistake to a firewire header instead of usb? Try this:

Go into the Device Manager and Remove the Card Reader. Shut down the system. Unplug the card reader from the mobo. Start the system and check that the reader is not showing in My Computer or Device Manager. Shut down again. Reconnect the reader, making sure it is connected to the proper header. Start the system and let XP find new hardware and install it. Don't provide any drivers from any other disk. Just be patient and let XP do it. Then check and see if it shows in My Computer and Device Manager correctly with no warnings. Good luck.

What would the card reader be listed as under the device manager? BTW theres no way i could have disconnected it, i havent opened up my case since i got the computer. I really am not sure what brand my card reader is...

In Device Manager click on the "+" in front of "Disk Drives" to expand...and your card reader should be there, along with your hard drive. If it's not running right using XP drivers...go to the manufactors web site & update the drivers for your device.

Before you do anything, I would check device manager first.

Alright under "Disk Drives" i see 4 USB drives and my HD.

CFC USB DEVICE
MMC " "
MSC " "
SMC " "

I clicked update driver, and let windows search for me. Then end result for all for of them were the same: The wizard could not find a better match for your hardware, than the software ur currently have installed..blah blah blah...

So i inserted my mobo CD and then did the same thing again, and the results were the same...

So.. now what.

Dlon...what I meant was to check in device manager, to see if those devices (drives) are working. Is there Any of those drives that has a Red or Yellow..."X, !, or ?" in front of the drive? If so, that means the drive is not working properly (usually a driver issue).

If there are no ... Red or Yellow..."X, !, or ?" marks...then the drive is working, albiet, maybe not the way it was before (probably using generic XP drivers).

To get enhanced functionality as you describe...those are most likely provided by the device manufacturer..you need to go to there web site & DL a current driver from them.
