XP Pro won't recognize spare HD

I have been having some difficulties with booting running Win 2000. After several weeks of frustration I decided to purchase a new HD (got one on sale) and upgrade the software to Win XP Pro. Installed Pro onto the new HD, set te old HD as a slave. However, Pro will not recognize the old HD. It shows up and is recognized during the boot up, but can not bee seen from the explore/my computer screen.

I suspect the difference may be due to disc format but am unsure. The new drive was formatted for NTFS (?) and I do not believe the old drive used this format. I would like to be able to recognize the drive so that I can recover info, then completely wipe the drive and use it for back up storage, etc.

Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks in advance.
