Out of viritual memory & long shutdown
Running 2k w/sp4, I formatted and reloaded the O/S
Updates drivers and software. Loaded my most used programs. Set everything up as I usually do and have done for the past couple of years. I have 13 processes loaded at startup. There are 2 program I use all the time; Opera and ThumbsPlus as I have for probably 5 years. All of a sudden I'm getting out of virtual memory warnings and evry long shutdown times (30 to 60+ seconds when it use to be less than 10 seconds) if I use these programs for a while. I can start the system and then shut it down without doing anything all is fine. NO hangs. I'm not sure it is either of these programs, it's just that I use these all the time. I looked at task manager but the memory usage of the processes doesn't add up to that amount. Example; as I type this the process total shows 180700, but the memory usage in Task Manager shows 267400. I have run SpyBot and my antivirus program (updated) and both are clean. Any ideas? |

Opera is a memory hog, it can eat as much as 160 megs. Before shutting down, close Opera and wait a few minutes for it to clear itself. It helps if you set the Opera preferences to empty cache on exit and wait for the hard drive to stop chattering before you do anything else.
How much physical ram do you have? |

I forgot to add that I set my file to start at 100MB and limit it to 300MB.
Now before you say that's the problem, I have done this since I started using 2k about 2 years ago with NO problem. ANYWAY, I have increased the size twice to 700MB and it still barks at me! As far as the shutdown, it never did this before. I have never had long shutdown issues before (that I remember, or at least this consistant). When I ran those numbers, Opera was using around 136000. I have 512MB of RAM and I do close all my programs including Opera, but I don't wait since I never had to. As far as it being a hog, it can't be, it's not a M$ program!

I also ran UHP Clean from M$ suggested by someone else. This result was from a long (bad) shutdown:

I would be suspicious of both those processes. You could manually shut each one down before shutting Windows down and see if it makes a difference. To shut down mxtask, you may have to shut the service down - it may not allow you to simply end process.
Check your versions of both these programs - see if there are any updates that fix issues - such as memory leaks. |

All of those I haven't had a problem with before!
It seems to be when I'm in Opera for a while and have d/l'ed many jpegs. That seems to be when I have the issues. Those two other programs have been fine with the last reload of the O/S a year or so ago. All of this just started whehn I reformatted THIS time! Nothing in the system changed (programs or otherwise). |

That's when Opera leaks like a sieve. You using the latest Opera and Java (7.54u1 and 1.4.2_06)?

Yes.
A memory leak is just memory that was used and not needed anymore, but isn't released back to the O/S? How about a issue with the UDP from nVidia for their nForce2 chipsets? Especially the memory controller? I had the older version from a year ago that I just updated to the latest version. It is still doing it. Last edited by videobruce; 01-03-2005 at 11:13 AM. |
