WINME with P4 3.0HT issues

I can't seem to install winme into the machine running P4 3.0 with Hyper Threading. The problem is whenever I've done installing winme and it boots up into the winme splash screen....suddenly comes the dos screen saying the vmm32.dll was damaged and recommends a reinstall.

It was a system using the ECS mainboard PM800 with 256mb of RAM.Shared 64mb of video ram.It was fine running XP.I wan't to make it a dual boot system but the 1st OS failed.

What can I do to solve this vmm32 thing? Is it because the winme doesn't recognizing the P4?

WinME does not support hyperthreading. You have to turn it off in the bios.

Did you disable it before installing WinMe, or after? If after, try installing WinMe again.

You can also see if the info in the MS article helps: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;258471

. . . Win98 has a patch somewhere for an error some computers get with some networking files - when the cpu is faster than 2ghz. I don't know if it applied to WinMe also - but if I have time tomorrow, I'll take a look. Might not have much to do with your setup, since the file your error message mentions is a different sort.

Did you try any of the MS Knowledge Base article's suggested fixes?

. . . and, when you mention "but the 1st OS failed" - do you mean XP?

If you have full backups, and time to redo everything from scratch, when creating a dual-boot system it's easiest to start by installing the oldest OS first, then end with the newest [the WinXP bootloader is the last one you want installed, since it can recognize and put the others on the boot menu].

You could also try reinstalling with HT disabled one more time, but remember to either clear the hard drive, or rename the current vmm32.dll to vmm32.old. The vmm32.dll file is actually created during a Windows installation, so you don't want Windows to keep and use your older, problematic, version.

There are also a few peripheral devices whose drivers used to cause this error - usually scanners - there were patches made for the Umax scanner errors, and for an Hp problem, there's a procedure in this thread: http://support.dell.com/support/topi...en&s=dhs&cs=19

Since it can be a driver problem, the troubleshooting can be fairly annoying, but keep at it & you should be Ok. [My first impression would be that to make a CD with all the recent drivers for your hardware, both for XP and for WinMe, and then to wipe the drive & start fresh might end up being the quickest repair. Otherwise you might spend a lot of time trying to find the problem. Leave HyperThreading off at least until you are finished with the dual boot, and then only enable it when you plan to boot into XP].

You won't be able to get Win 95 or Win 98 installed on it without some trickery - there's an issue with processors faster than 2.1 GHz. ME, 2000, or XP should install, if you are having problems, there's a hardware issue somewhere - such as a faulty motherboard or ram - or bios misconfiguration.
