Question XP audio is getting choppy, background programs running? MSCONFIG?

Hello,
I helped a friend build a computer last week
Soyo P4 Dragon 2 V1.0 (Intel 865 chipset)
2.8 ghz Intel CPU (not overclocked)
512 mb ram
128 ATI 9600SE (Xtasy brand) 8x AGP
120 Gig IDE HDD
Sony DVD/CD-RW combo
On-board audio
No conflicts in "Device Manager"
no internet

At first, the audio was perfect. I think as the games are loaded maybe 6 or 7 games (my friend has a couple of kids).
Now as games are played, the audio is choppy.
Would the correct way to fix this be using MSCONFIG and un-check the start-up boxes?

Thanks!

msconfig won't help, try re-installing the audiodrivers.

Do your games need DVD inserted while playing or use HDD frequently?
I had such case when I had had DMA mode for HDD and DVD disabled. This devices use much of CPU power, so, there was nothing left for sound processing (I have an integrated soundcard aka AC97)
I think this bug can be fixed by enabling DMA mode is this one is disabled on your PC.
P.S.: sorry for my English, it's not my native :-)

AC97 is the worst thing ever. My dad had multipe AC97 boards, problems all the time. He got a new board without the AC97 chip and all problems were gone. I prefer a seperate soundcard with a good processing unit to take load off ur CPU.

Hello & Happy Holidays!
Yes, I do have on-board AC-97, and yes my Hdd is set to DMA.

I would have thought that on-board audio takes less resources to run. compared to a PCI audio card.

Thanks!

It depends on the quality of the PCI audio card. Cheap cards eat resources too.

Thumbs up

I guess the number of games loaded isn't so much the problem, Looks like it's mostly the AC97 on-board audio. Thanks For the info.
I'll post the next audio card selection question in the proper forum.

Happy Holidays !
