This may sound way out in left field, but go into control panel, Internet options, Connections - and make sure it's set to never dial a connection.

Maybe your explorer.exe is corrupt and you need to copy over a new one from your XP cd. Just a guess, good luck.

how would you go about coping over explorer.exe does it have to be extracted first and is it a case of just coping over the existing file? thanks for the help

If this is XP, make sure you have SP1.
System restore may work also or "SFC /scannow" from the command line.

In the mean time, the "expand" technique didn't work so I will see where we can get a new explorer.exe a little later when I have time, but for now see if you can restore to a time when it worked. I'll try and find an answer later tonight. Good Luck.

Sorry, I looked real quick and haven't found too much. Hopefully someone else can jump in.

I tried to stay away from a repair install, leaving it only as a last resort. But if no one lese has ideas, a repair install should do the trick. It's an option you choose when booting from the xp cd. It may erase your hot-fixes from windowsupdate, that's why I was hesitant against it.

Good Luck.
