Exclamation xp error sound

I am getting an "error sound" shortly after I get to the desktop...things are still loading as I can see the h/d led is active (slightly blinking) I get the sound but no displayed message.....

I have checked in the Event viewer to look for errors and there is none. I get this on every restart or even when I fire it up cold I know it is when something (but what) is loading apon start up... the only thing in msconfig NOT checked is sstray.exe/r but I disabled that a week ago and it just started doing this a day ago?

I do not know in which order things load, I am sure it is different everytime, but the sound happens everytime but sometimes happens faster than others?

any ideas...evrting works fine that I can tell but this just bugs me....just makes the sound like it would when there is a file missing from an application or the sound you get if you cannot delete something when you try to!?

I also believe this error sound maybe related to something that controls internet speed?

I now have a problem with slow DSL speeds but I think it's a windows problem....heres why?

I have 2 lan ports 1 is the Nvidia 10/100 and the other is the Intel proset 10/100/1000 (gigabit lan)

problem is may speeds now are only 140-200 kbs (down from 1.5 mbs) my dsl speed is 1500 download and 384 upload (verizon dsl) ...my upload is unchanged it runs at the 384 or close to it....

I have 3 pc running all the time and the others run at the rated speed? So I changed the cables, switched locations and even bypassed the router and running the pc straight to the modem. This made NO change what so ever

I did notice before the gigabit lan gave me the fastest speed performance now it is the slowest of the 2 running at 140-145 while the Nvidia port can hit the 200 mark ...still far short of the 1500 it should be?

I open the network and did a repair of both lines and that did not help...I did a full test at PcPitstop and I got a message the said "Internet Explorer slows down excessively when trying to run scripting"

I also ran a scripting test and it failed?

Any Ideas?.......I get no errror message of any kind when browzing the net?

I did a full virus scan and spyware/adaware and all clean, no entries?

I did not want to do a full earase and clean install but it's sure looking that way..I also did diagnostics on both lan ports and the come back passed

Think what you are hearing is the beep that some systems make on start up as usb devices are recognized. One beep for each device. Nothing to worry about, it's normal.

You cannot delete a file that's in use. Of course you will get an error message and beep.

He's getting the sound on start-up just after the desktop appears. The sound is the same one you get when you try to delete and active file.

ok let me try to explain this better....

This happens when I start my computer and I just get to the desktop....programs are still loading when this happens ( it's like a program loads but can't find a needed file or something)

I can navigate and do things, it's just as things are loading from when you first start the pc.... I am not trying to delete any thing, I was just trying to explain thats the sound I here ( with NO pop upwarning)

just say you turn on the pc and sit there doing absolutly nothing ....windows does it's thing....it gets to the desktop and shortly after that you here the sound ( it is and error sound)

It has to do with something that normally loads and I think it has something to do with IE or internet because my internet is way slow (just on this pc others are fine)

I tried to do a System Restore and it failed twiced... said " windows cannot restore to a earlier time. no changes have benn made to your computer" ???

I would just like some insite to maybe something I mite have overlooked? I am going to do a fresh install down the road ( I have to change p/s and vid card and maybe ram..) won't be till July after baby is born (will be #8)...

Any Ideas....Terry

Okay - look in the Security forum and read the HijackThis sticky thread - scan for viruses, spyware, etc. and see what you come up with. If that doesn't fix it, review the thread again for specific guidance and post a HijackThis log.

You know what... If you will spend some time in the hijackthis thread like GLC suggested and then post the log, you might have an excellent chance of finding the answer to your problem. I know next to nothing here, and don't have your problem, but I spent a couple of hours reading that thread and some of the links tonight, and believe the answer to your problem lies in that thread. Or, you could mess around with Dr. Watson.

Okay, now download HJT - and run it immediately after a fresh reboot and post the log. This tool will show us what is running in your startups, among other things - and save us from having to play the 20 questions game.

You can remove that - it's just an ActiveX object.

You have SP2 - I wonder if your version of Nero/InCD is old and has compatibility issues - same with your Iomega HotBurn (that's what the Autolaunch.exe is) - or if the 2 separate burning apps are conflicting?

Check your compatibility with your version of Window Blinds too - and you can get rid of that Power Reg Scheduler in your startup - and probably that media manager too.

Thanks glc....

Ok I do have all the recent versions for everything...nero...Iomega and the error sound started about a month later....

I did turn off Incd and the Iomega autolaunch and I still get the sound....

I believe it's in one of the last 2 or 3 things that load on start-up? and if I read right aren't they symantic products?

When I try to do a internet speed test is says I have a problem with scripting? The internet slow way down when trying scripting? ( this was in pcpitstop) not sure if it's related or what?

will double check again....

Here's possibly your scripting problem - but you can't just remove it with HJT.

O23 - Service: ScriptBlocking Service - Symantec Corporation - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYMANT~1\SCRIPT~1\SBServ.exe

This is part of the Symantec security suite. I'd suggest you completely uninstall it and run some tests. If the problem is gone, find a security alternative - such as AVG Free antivirus and the builtin XP firewall - or the Trend Micro PC-Cillin security suite. Norton works well for some folks, but other folks have nothing but problems with it.

Another note - I see that you are overclocking and tweaking, which is fine I guess, but then you go and install stuff like this that just slows your machine down. Norton 2004 and 2005 has a gigantic footprint. The Trend Micro suite I mentioned is top rated by ZDNet, one big reason is it doesn't turn your system into a bowl of Jello like Norton and McAfee.

Check the two O4 boxes for them in HJT, then click Fix Checked. This will remove them from the startup. They are not services - the media manager is starting from the registry current user run key and the power reg is starting from the start menu all users startup group.

Thanks again.....will do!

I am overclocked and well as for the tweaking....sort of limited....the whole purpose for using the Mobile cpu was to make a reasonably fast pc for less dollars....All except for the p/s this worked, I should have went better, I am getting and Antec true480 soon and switching it....

This pc benchmarks well but has a few minor glitches I believe is windows related? (like slow internet speeds)
Thanks Again

another change

Ok....heres what I did

1) I un-installed Nortons Internet Securities 2004 ( antivirus and firewall)....rebooted still got error sound?

2) installed AVG 7.0 rebooted scaned ( after updating) and came back clean!

Ok here is what I noticed about the error sound....follow closely ( I am not trying to be sacastic here I just want to be sure anyone/everyone who reads this understands what I am trying to say) ....I am not sure whats going on....

I rebooted the pc and as soon as I could on the desktop I click Internet Explorer and the Internet came up really fast and I could navigate noticeably faster ( while start-up programs are still loading) Then boom, the dreaded error sound and the Internet got noticeable slower.....

Any Ideas???? I ran Hijack again and all the Nortons stuff is gone and I went from 37 processes down to 28-29.....man I am buffalowed here...

I am going to go scratch my brain some more......

as far as the overclocking thing....haven't you ever had a car and just couldn't resist putting on some kind of power enhancer? headers, blower, new cam......? same here... just some humor for the day

Thanks...

I got rid of the window blinds...same problem

Is there any way to see exactly what is loading on start-up and when? So maybe I could see what program is loading when I get the sound?

In Xp if you go into the "control panel" under "sounds and audio devices" and click the "critical stop"..... this is the sound I hear....

event viewer

Yes I did just now and here is what I get...

System.... Dhcp error

double clicked it and this is what it says....

The IP address lease 192.168.1.100 for the Network Card with the network address 000D613A3D7F has been denied by the DHCP server 0.0.0.0 ( the Dhcp server sent a DHCPNACK) ?

I clicked the link which took me to microsofts site http://go.microsoft.com/flink/events.asp
heres what it shows...

Details
Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 1002
Source: Dhcp
Version: 5.0
Symbolic Name: EVENT_NACK_LEASE
Message: The IP address lease %1 for the Network Card with network address %2 has been denied by the DHCP server %3 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).

Explanation
The DHCP Server service did not extend the lease on your computer's IP address, so your computer temporarily lost its connection with the network.

This could be caused by a scope change. For example, when a roaming laptop moves from one network to another, its IP address lease might need renewal. When the DHCP Client service tries to renew the address, that request might go to a different server that will not extend the lease either because it does not know about this address lease or because it has already issued the address lease to another client.

This also happens when two DHCP servers are configured to give out addresses in the same IP address range.

User Action
No user action is required. The DHCP Client service will continue trying to obtain a working IP address until it succeeds, and DHCP establishes the network connection on its own.

I mite add the other 2 pc's also have this error upon initial fire up and I believe this may be caused by the router....I bypassed the router and Reset the modem and still get the sound? but not the error (Dhcp) I shut down everything again....reset the modem and rehooked up the router and did NOT get the Dhcp error but did get the sound again? so I dodn't think that was it?

I have spent more time trying to find this than just doing a fresh install but I would like to know what is causing this? kind of the curiosity thing

I did try to disable MBM5 as well as INCD and Iomega and Intel network adapter and the Nvidia driver services and still the same? Right now I have 30 processes running I get the error sound still and no errors listed in the event viewer?

I get the sound long after MBM loads?

Problem solved!!!

I would like to thank everyone who scratched there brain with me on this one!!! Especially glc!

It was Nero Incd! I disabled it in "services.msc" and still got the error sound. I have spent countless hours trying to find this problem...

So I went into MsConfig and just unchecked everything and rebooted....And waited and waited and what! no sound! wow!

I was amazed finally it was gone but what was it? so I just recheck one at a time and rebooted....Til half way down the list when I rechecked Incd and rebooted and got the error I check and sure enough this was the culprit..

I rechecked all other I tems leaving Incd unchecked and rebooted and sound gone....I am not sure why or what it was doing to make an error so I just uninstalled it totally along with ever other Nero prroduct except the burning rom.... I do not know if I need Incd or not but I guess I'll find out next time I need to burn a cd/dvd on the fly!

I just wonder why or what after all this time happened...I did upgrade from version 6.3.1.2.5 to 6.6.0.3 and had some problems with locking up, I did do a full upgrade of all parts, and would not copy a dvd on the fly. I did just unistall the version of burning rom and revert back to version 6.3.1.6 maybe there was a conflict some where....but it worked?

InCD is only needed if you want to format RW discs to use them like giant floppies. Did you install the latest InCD? That's Package 3 on the Nero update page.
