Windows freezes after new VGC installation

friend tried to install a Gcard which i think was a bit to new for his old system.
now after boot i get a black screen or No display.
so i removed the new Card and set the bios to display onboard graphics but still would not load windows.black screen
also tried "start windows from last known good config".no joy.
so i tried the recovery console and installed XP setup files or tried to recover windows,
now i get a blue screen(not of death)but saying
"setup is being restarted....."and then it locks up/does nothing.
tried starting in safe mode but the files load up until "mup.sys" and then locks again.
seems like windows has become corrupted or a graphics driver has caused a problem with display.

i just need to get into desktop to try and figure out whats happened/reset defaults.
how can i do this when it won't pass this "setup restarting" screen?

TIA
JP
