I am going to get a new computer. And wanted to know a few things regarding OS.
Don't worry about how you answer these questions or even if some one else already answered. 1# I don't have WinXP but I do have WinMe this new computer will be 64-Bit will WinMe be able to run on it? 2# Will WinMe be less secure on the internet even with full WinMe Updates? 3# Have you ever heard of a deal where if you have a 64-Bit CPU you can get a sort of coupon to get a 64-bit OS later when it comes out? 4# when do you think WinXP 64-Bit is coming out for AMD? 5# Is it overall worth it to simply buy WinXP with all things considered? 6# or is it better to wait until longhorn? 7# How do pepole load more then one computer with WinXP? 8# Is it true that only WinXP can run PCI-E? So WinMe can't run PCI-E? 9# is 64-Bit more secure or is that only if service pack 2 from and with WInXP loaded?

I would recommend XP. ME would be buggin' out your new system and will not be supported soon. And for PCI-E to work, you may need WinME drivers, depending on the board, IF they have them.

Yeah, I read 1996 and then double-checked the date of the thread. I thought for a second that this was a VERY old thread.

Ok, I agree I'll wait and see how WinME works first before I upgrade.
One quick thing I noticed on this PCI-E Video Card http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...123-146&depa=1 It says at the bottem its for WinXP/Win 2000 as oposed to all the X8 Cards which all seem to have WinMe in them. So this maks me think you have to have WinXP to get PCI-E Video Cards to work for games for example. |

Guess I look at things a little differently. Buying the latest technology hardware and then crippling it with outdated, unsupported software like ME is like buying a new high performance car that is recommended to run on Premium Gas. But to save a few bucks you chose to fill the tank with regular. The spark knock is a minor nusiance but the loss of power is huge. Personally, I would NEVER install ME on a new build. ME was unstable and buggy when first introduced and takes constant maintenance to keep it running even on old systems that were compatible with it. Intoducing ME to current hadware is asking for trouble. My motto is "Do it right or don't do it at all".

Naw, your thinking's about the same as mine, PR. It just might be my interpretation of what goodnice wants. I’m thinking it’s just like when someone builds a hotrod system but for budget reasons wants to use onboard sound until they save up for a nice set of speakers and an Audigy card, which is OK.
So I guess I should ask: goodnice, is your wanting to install ME a temporary move until either XP 64 comes out and / or you save up some more money? or are you thinking of a permanent install? |

ME is not that obsolete - but it's not a true 32 bit operating system like NT/2K/XP. I personally prefer 2K and won't wish ME on my worst enemy - I'll take 98 (FE or SE, makes no difference but SE is a lot better) over ME in a heartbeat - and I'd prolly take 95B over ME too if I didn't care about good USB support.

If I could at least wait for a Windows XP 64-Bit for AMD version then I wouldn't be spending another 100$ for my OS. Do you think Windows XP 64-Bit for AMD version will be more expensive then 100$? |

I think you can already buy the Pro Windows XP 64-Bit version, except that version only lets you use Intel 64-Bit CPUs.
I could be wrong though. |
