SP2 is such a radical change that it's esssentially a new operating system - and there are a lot of factors in play for a successful install. If you are installing XP clean on a blank drive, it's best to use a slipstreamed CD instead of trying to do it as an upgrade. If you are upgrading an existing install, you must carefully prepare it, spyware, viruses, an outdated bios, or incompatible software can kill the upgrade dead as a doornail.

I'm by no means an expert but I've installed sp2 with no problems what so ever. Only thing I remember doing is running a virus and spyware program first.

I had to buy a new mobo because the company wouldn't put out a bios upgrade.

It is recommended to close all running programs (firewall,AV,internet, etc) before exacuting the upgrade.

Boot it into safe mode, go to control panel, system, advanced, startup and recovery, and uncheck restart on error. Next time it crashes it should bluescreen instead of reboot, read the bluescreen for clues.
