A Read Disk Error Occurred

I'm trying to install winxp but I keep getting "a read disk error occurred". I had to use six start-up floppy's because the cd would never start the install. After I chose the file system to be NTFS it formatted HD and then restarted. Once it rebooted is when I got the error message.

Any ideas?

Are you sure the bios antivirus is disabled? Is this a genuine Microsoft CD and not a burned copy? The fact that it won't boot from the CD indicates that either the CD is defective or you have a hardware issue such as a bum CD drive, IDE cable, or improper jumpering.

Thanks glc.

I just tried starting over this time formatting the HD NTFS (quick) and then got the following:

The following value in the .SIF file used by setup is corrupted or missing.

Value 0 on the line in section [sourcedisksfiles] with key "SP1.cab."

Setup cannot continue.

Same comments apply, with other hardware problems possible, such as defective ram.
