XP automatic update issue

I am sure that this has already been addressed. I have searched and can not find what I am looking for. My brothers system will not manually or automatically update. I checked his services and automatic update is set on automatic, I then switched it to manual and still does not update. Is the only resolution to reformat and reinstall XP??

Is he connected to the internet via cable/DSL? Is your internet configured correctly so that the automatic updates will connect by itself to the internet and look for updates?

No we are not getting any error messages. When we try to manually update we get a message microsoft is checking for updates and it just sits there.

He is using DSL

Everything that I see is ok. Does update need to log on????

This maybe a shot in the dark, but does this computer have an anti-virus program. You may have a virus on the computer that could be blocking you from logging onto the Windows update site.

Like I said, that is a shot in the dark, but it is worth the shot to look for. If you do not have an anti-virus go to this site http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ for a free virus scan.

No viruses guys. I ran AVG when I installed it on the computer in question. Carl's brother is near me. I saw this problem once before after a SP2 install. The WU site opens but the system scan won't run. It just sits on the "wait" screen. Since this is the second time I've seen it, I'm sure others have encountered this problem too. I'm gonna do some more searching, Carl.

Hey Carl. Take a look at this. These look like possibilities.

Thanks Red,

One of my friends here said he had the same problem. I am waiting for what he did. I am also researching some databases here at work. Thanks for all of your help. Hopefully a resolution can be found.

I also printed out the material you suggested. I will link whith his PC tomorrow using remote assistance and try these that you gave me.

Thanks.
