Is WinXP Pro upgrade from Win98SE Easy?

Hi.

I didn't know if I should post this in the WinXP forum or this one. I have Win98SE on my PC and wanted to upgrade to WinXP Pro. However, I purchased WinXP Pro OEM. (I was shopping online and found no "upgrade" to WinXP Pro, so I got the OEM version.)

Using the OEM version, can I upgrade from Win98SE? Microsoft's site says I can upgrade from Win98SE to WinXP Pro, but will the OEM version accomplish an "upgrade"?

A friend also said that yes I could upgrade, but that I'd have to go thru a lot of riggamarole to do it -- that it won't be an easy task. He suggested that I do a clean install, but the documentation for WinXP Pro says that a clean install is for advanced users (of which I certainly am not). The documentation said that I may need to update my Setup files as well, or I may run into problems with an upgrade; but my friend said the opposite -- that if I do update the setup files, I'll run into upgrade problems. My friend also said that I'd not be able to use the GUI, but will have to upgrade via what he calls the "text phase."

Does any of that sound familiar to anyone out here? Thanks.

Upgrading from 98 to XP is iffy at best and I don't recommend it. As for a clean install being for advanced users, don't worry about it... it pretty much takes you by the hand and walks you through it. Just set your BIOS to boot from CD first... drop your CD in and when your machine boots, you will see a msg to press any key to boot from CD... do that and follow the instructions on screen. When prompted to format, format using NTFS... then again... just do what it asks you to do.

Before you start though, what are the specs of your machine?

Thanks, Hal9000!

I'll be installing the new OS on a PC that was originally optimized for music production (but I never really used it much at all): 2 SCSI hard drives (10,000 speed), 1.0GHz processor speed, 512 MB RAM each drive. Only 9GB & 18GB memory, though, between the two of them. But that's plenty for what I want to do -- I'm setting it up to be a dedicated server for an Internet radio station.

How do I set up the BIOS to boot from a CD? Thx.

Just go into BIOS Features Setup and set the first boot device to the CD-ROM drive. Put WinXP CD in drive, Save and Exit the BIOS.
