Question Multiple svchost.exe Processes Running

My computer was running a bit slow, so I popped open the Task Manager to see what processes were running, and I saw seven (7) 'svchost.exe' processes running. Each was a different size ranging between 276K and 21,160K. I understand this is a Windows process, but I'd like to get rid of a few. I'm worried that if I terminate one, it will terminate them all. What could be causing this and is it okay to terminate some of them? Thanks.

The MS knowledge base says 4-5 instances running is normal. They're necessary for various services running in the background. Look closely at the file names, tho, because variants are likely trojans or spyware. If it's one letter off from the proper file name, you'll want to be sure to scan with an updated virus checker.
