Transfer files.
Hello, my current computer has XP Pro and I added a smaller hard drive. I then used that Backup feature in XP Pro to backup My documents and settings to that smaller HD. I now have a newer computer. I formatted that HD and loaded XP Pro. I then put that smaller HD from the older computer into my newer computer. Then I used that backup feature again to copy the backup info from the small HD to my C drive. BUT--the total space that was used on the C drive was 7,663,898,624 in the old computer, and the space that is now used on the new computer is 8,789,815,226 did I mess up ? Can some info. be loaded on the new computer in two different spaces ? Why is more space being taken up on the new computer than was on the old computer ? Thanks, Mike

Could have been something you copied along with it? Check it just to be sure.

Force Flow, No new files have been copied to the new computer yet. in fact I still haven't loaded everything that was on the old computer to the new computer yet, and more space is already taken up.
RenamonXP, The only thing on the small HD was the backup folder, and maybe one or two other small files, but the backup utility should have only looked for the backup file ?? Again, same question--can the same info. be listed at different places on the new hard drive ? That might explain why more space is being used. Thanks ! |

Different cluster sizes, due to the different drive sizes. The larger the drive is, the larger the clusters are.

Additional info. I took the smaller HD out of my new computer. Put it back into the older computer, and formatted it. Then I just did the old fashioned drap and drop all the items that were in MY DOCUMENTS on my old computer to the smaller HD. Then I removed the smaller HD. I then reformatted the new computer and reinstalled XP Pro. I then installed the small HD in the new computer. Then I did the drag and drop from the small HD to the HD in the new computer. I now have everything reloaded on the new computer except a few odds and ends. The total space on the new computer used now is only
6,503,927,808 which is a long way from the 8,789,815,296. the first way. I must have done something wrong using that backup utility, or else there was the same info. store two places on the new computer. Does anyone know if that is what happened--was the same info. possibly stored two places on the new computer, which is the only explanation of so much space being used ? Thanks again ! |
