I leave my machines running pretty much all the time. After doing alot of picture or video editing, tho, I find they start to slow down. I guess the memory just gets too full. I think the techinical term is 'jammed up.'
Just curious how often you restart your systems just to clear things up.

Mine get turned off everyday. But then I am not allowed to leave them on overnight (shame about that, better folding scores if I did). I sometimes restart if I am playing games for a very long period of time, since I find this can cause it to slow down a tiny bit.

Once every few days. I usually leave mine running 24/7. If I have any problems or hiccups, I'll give it a restart. Even if everything is running ok I usually try to restart every 3-4 days.

I pretty much leave mine up 24/7. Only time I reboot is if I've just installed some software which requires it, or if I feel like it's bogged down.

I leave it running as long explorer.exe doesn't crash and reload (which it occasionally does, closing down some progs down in the system tray, requiring a logoff-logon to load them up again);
As long as I don't change/add anything that requires a reboot; And as long as I don't physically transport my computer somewhere; In other words, as long as it will keep chugging, I'll have it up and running.

Normally when I boot up for the day. If I do "a lot" of different stuff, then sometimes I reboot out of the old habit from Win 98.2.

My personal PCs I reboot after MS updates or a program requiring it. Have a few at work that probably haven't been rebooted in months or at least weeks.

My system is still in its preliminary months of starting up - still installing software/drivers and tweaking some stuff, and on top of that, just random reboots the computer does on its own every month combines to about once a week.

old p3 in the basement has been on for about a month. if you leave your computer on for a long time, its amusing to open task manager and look at the system idle process time(mine was about 400 hours) i usually just standby for quick startup and to save power, or i just turn off the monitor.

Didn't vote. You didn't have a box for "Only when it needs it due to system changes." I rebooted this one after 45 days when I was updating the BIOS. My wifes PC is now on it's 52nd day.
I love XP. It is stable. I only power them off when I'm going to be gone for a extended period of time. Chas

Leave mine on 24/7 for years now. Kinda like the old question many years ago.......will a light bulb last longer by shutting it on and off or if you leave it on continually? Seems there is a school of thought that the filament will break eventually because of all the heating up and then cooling down (expansion and contraction}. I tend to agree with it.
I do reboot every other day or so, and especially if playing a lot of intensive games and photo work. Regards.......................Sterling

I built a SFF PVC using Windows XP Home Edition and have left it on 24/7 without any problems for the last 3-4 months, although the big test is when I come home this Sunday to see if it is still running properly.

My computer runs 24/7. The only time I actually shut it down is if I am going to be gone for an extended period of time. The only thing on my system that gets shut down is my monitor at night. Otherwise, I very rarely restart it. Maybe once or twice a week, depending on whether or not it seems to be bogging down, or as stated earlier, a program change that requires a restart.
Since I'm folding, the extra bit of power my computer consumes when I'm not using it is at least helping a great cause. Scomac |

I voted maybe once a week... but I doubt that it's even that often... I only reboot for hardware/software upgrades/installations.

I know most will shut down when gone for extended periods, but outta curiousity, why do some of you shut down at night or while gone during the day? I know some said due to noise for sleeping purposes, but what else?

mine is on 24/7, i only restart when installing new software and it needs it or when it crashes (rare). i even leave it on while i'm away, but i do make sure its offline. the more its on and the more i'm not using it the more folding gets done!

I only restart when either programs need it, the computer horrible freezes, or most commonly when my cd drive disapears. Its a samsung drive and every so often it just stops working or disapears from device manager. A quick restart makes it all beter though.

Only restart when I have to. System has now been up with no reboot for about 2 weeks. It's gone much longer before though.

Isn't it a waste of energy to keep your computer going 24/7?
How many watts/hour does a 2.0G Pentium consume? Vic |

I think it adds up to no more than leaving a light bulb on. THIS site has some interesting info on the amounts used.
The theory for leaving them on is that turning your computer on and off all the time can cause as much or more wear and tear on a computer as allowing it to run. The expanding and contracting of the components as they repeatedly heat and cool may begin to break those parts down. |
