repair question
Ok, my anti-virus program (I use AVG) deleted some operating system files so everytime I start up windows I get these 2 prompts that they are missing and that the prompts will stop if I were to re-install the files. So I opted to use my XP disc and use the repair feature. Here's my question...
It asked me for an installation number.......would that be the same number as the CD Key I used or would it like me to specify where the xp installation is? |

It's the cd key on your XP disk.

No, if you are in the repair console, it's asking which installation of XP you want to log into. If there is more than one, they will be listed - if there is only one, just press 1. All you can do in the console is extract and copy files one at a time, you may want to do a repair *install* - which is done by choosing Setup, not repair - then when it finds the existing install, it will THEN ask you if you want to repair it.

What files is it telling you it can't find? It may be they're not Windows files at all but virus files Windows is being told to use but can't find due their being removed...but the instructions to Windows to use them weren't removed.
